MagicBands came out in January of 2013

MagicBands are plastic bracelets that contain RFID radios, in use at Walt Disney World Resort. The MagicBands form the central part of the MyMagic+ experience, providing a way for the system to connect data to guests. This includes connecting park tickets, hotel room keys, payments, and PhotoPass information to the MagicBands. The bands were announced on January 7, 2013 by Tom Staggs as a part of MyMagic+. Space Mountain Opens at Magic Kingdom

On this day in Disney History (January 15, 1975)… The Space Mountain attraction (sponsored by RCA) opens in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, Florida. The grand opening festivities included a band of 2,000 high school students, fireworks and the release of 50,000 balloons. A space-themed indoor roller coaster, the first official ride is taken by Colonel James Irwin, the pilot of the Lunar Module on Apollo XV.
